http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ton

Ton = Ton

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonne

Tonne = Metric Ton

Metric Ton != Ton

Re: OPINIONS: your central opinionated hub

basically tonne and ton are different but americans call tonne ton because they're stupid and therefore cause a confliction with themselves.

at least that's what I thought.

As an American myself, I prefer metric.

I honestly don't give a shit about either. I think we should base it off perfect squares or prime numbers. Simply because it'd be stupid and confusing.

Re: OPINIONS: your central opinionated hub

metric is better for things like physics but for general household purposes I'd rather say that I'm 6"2 rather than convert it to metres.

Re: OPINIONS: your central opinionated hub

Why convert it to metres when you can just count in centimetres to start with

Re: OPINIONS: your central opinionated hub

because I don't carry around a metre ruler but I know how big a foot is (as a foot is smaller it's easier to gauge its size in comparison to a metre).

also what is the point changing your characters speech/turn descriptions/army name or anything similar through an unreliable translator to provide appalling results that can sometimes not even be translated back?

it doesn't seem to add some kind of epic proportion to a turn description, in fact I don't really want to attempt to read or translate or even look at some foreign text!

What also annoys me is people who pretend to be computers in their turn descriptions and just fill it with meaningless punctuation and capital letters
Or worse, pretend to be a command line interface from the 1960s when working as a supercomputer

It's just annoying to read

Honestly he could say "my donkey poops green buckets" in serbian and it would look just as good as if he said "OHNOES Bob is dead!"

Re: OPINIONS: your central opinionated hub

Metric is far better for actual measuring but my education has inches and feet grounded into my mind, I can basically size things up with my head in them. As for the metric system, I have no real conception of how big they all are aside from comparing them to feet/yards/pounds in my head and doing math from there. It's nothing personal metric system, I'm just not cut out to use you.

I honestly had more fun reading his turn in Ukrainian, it made it funny.

Yeah, I do. I'm still hating the English language.

Eh, perhaps Metal, but I enjoy writing it personally. What do you think of accents?

Re: OPINIONS: your central opinionated hub

Accents are great because you can still read what they are saying. I don't see the point writing in a language no one understands (wait why don't you just convert your whole turn description to another language too!).

I encourage accents, they're great for giving your units a lot of character.

A great example of accents in literature would be the Redwall series by Brian Jacques.

[Autherian] Or maybe tags?
[Cocohenian] Also might stop the whole Stargate syndrome going around.
[Latin] Bah. Too much work for the simple pre-pube. Carry on with your "Everybody knows english!" scheme.

Above in Denmen's post: Good way of using language for character
Typing in another language or with silly syntax or something, not so good

The platypus avatar is misleading. Denmen hasn't posted on this page.
