Dead Data (EpicJ vs LtOblivious)

The sun of a distant earth-like planet rises above brisk winter-touched mountains.

A ship, long-dead and beyond repair, sits in the snow. Bodies of it's former crew litter it, the victims of a terrible ancient tragedy. Their remains may be cold but they have no yet lived out their use.

That is of little concern, however. What is of concern is a small leather briefcase, soaking in the stagnant frozen water of the toilet bowl it was dumped in. What it holds inside it's primitive locks is unknown, but it may harbor the true nature of the happenings that befell this vessel.

A small, specialized party of Adeptus Mechanicus cyborg soldiers escort the Magos Dominus Explorator, Carnus Caughran to the snow covered wreck. At the front of the procession is a servo skull probe, built from a loyal Imperial citizen's bleached bones as a grim type of funerary art. Empty eye sockets peer into the distance without thought, but the instruments inside it's cranium take extensive survey of the surroundings for later review. Just behind it is a Corpuscarii Electro-Priest known as Glycerius. Devout in their worship of the motive force, these followers of the machine cult undergo massive alterations to become a living battery of divine power. At the expense of their vision, they learn to wield the strange energies of the Omnissiah as a deadly weapon and become highly sensitive to electricity in all it's forms. Current still flows through out the marooned vessel, enough to sustain it's undamaged systems for some time.

Carnus makes his way down the narrow ice tunnel. Practically immortal, the heavily augmented techpriest has long ago exchanged his limbs and organs--considered weak and inferior by the cult mechanicus, for a rat's nest of wirey, utility mechadendrite manipulators and servo arms. Mounted on it's metal carapace is an eradication ray and a number of life support systems. It also carries an arc pistol and the customary Omissian axe. Three Skitarii Vanguard follow, designated as personal guards. The fire team is lead by an Alpha with a power sword and arc pistol. The other two carry deadly radium carbines, warming the permafrost around them with the unnatural heat of background radiation. One of the vanguard carries an omnispex and sweeps the cave ahead for any crew, squatters, or stowaways.

The tunnel ahead is void of life, much like the ship, in a way.

The ship itself is rather quiet, only the sound of the wind occupies it's halls.

However, the incoming party is rather loud, and it's loudness carries itself through the snow, into the hull of the ship, and this agitates the crew. One of them, the closest to the entrance, begins to rise. Their blood thickens, coagulates into mass. It carries the bones of it's once former self, and stands. The words 'LEAVE' frame it's inner machinations as it eagerly awaits the arrival of new visitors.

Prepare to be spooked

Glycerius stands just below the puncture into the ship above, reciting an ancient psalm to soothe the lonely machine spirit of the abandoned spacecraft. It perceives the reactor just above it, seeing conduits and junctions in his mind's eye. It is a remarkable design, but certainly not Imperial in origin. Where an Astarte or an Inquisitor might see heresy, the Mechanicus tech-priests are less quick with their judgement especially of an ancient device as yet unstudied. The servo skull enters what must be the engineering section of the ship, relaying images to the Dominus of markings and the damage to the hull. Carnus eagerly sifts through the new information, comparing it against centuries of personal experience exploring the frontier and the vast data-stores of xeno and independent human ship classifications for a match. None are found, which makes the discovery even more remarkable.

The skeletal shambler is drawn further by the sounds of the living; it cautiously crawls over the broken remains of an airlock door.

Augury scanners on the first probe pay special attention to the set of three tanks, one visibly compromised and emptied of it's coolant. It is unclear if this configuration of star-drive is based on void space technology or some other method of propulsion. It's size is small for an interstellar ship, perhaps a sub light vessel built for transportation within a single star system. Microphones and other recorders on the servo skull capture only the arctic winds above and the faint sound of dripping water, as well as the clanking and whirring of the Vanguard's bionic legs as they march through the tunnel. The blood-spattered skeletal figure approaching goes unnoticed for now. Electricity jumps from the metal diode fingertips of Glycerius as he takes his measure of the room he has entered. A plain gray rag is tied over what had been his eyes, long since cooked and melted in their sockets by the ancient capacitor it wears. Carnus and his Skitarii bodyguard advance through the opening after the blinded priest. The way is lighted by a second probe, outfitted with a lantern. Curious, but not naive, the Magos allows his guard to pass him and take the lead into the belly of this wounded beast.

If the skeleton had a voice box it would scream a hideous scream. Alas, the only warning it can offer is the jitter of it's bones as it sprints aggressively at the nearest of the intruders.

If said intruders had the equipment required, they may identify a hyper-low frequency hum, not quite pin-point-able, but generally emitting from bridge area of the ship.

The first vanguard vaults into the hole, his omnispex blaring with proximity alerts and exotic readings. Carnus watches it all unfold through the sensory output of the drones above and his guards' helmet feeds. The spotlight shines in the creature's eyes as Glycerius leaps off the deck with a clap of thunder and latches to the second ring of the reactor's coolant array. His hand catches the jagged glass edge first before he makes a good hold. Strength comes to him from the Omnissiah and his own discipline, along with a healthy amount of fear. The glass shatters in his grip, fingers lodged firmly on the outer metal ribbing of the tank. Even so, the Magus is sending the electro-priest an alternative perch, finding a lift's controls with the skull probe and engaging the dusty and disused elevator. The vanguard waste no time, weapon already leveled at the vile, bloody form. The squad leader rushes onto the shoulder plating of it's subordinate, boosting itself into the opening with weapons drawn. It waits to leap into the chamber until the hail of radioactive isotope slugs passing overhead have been delivered to their target. He calculates he may not even get to use his sword, but holds it ready all the same.

The skeleton is torn in twain by a hail of projectiles. Blood spurts out at bafflingly high speed from the remaining bottom half of the creature as the top half arcs away.

Further down the hall, another corpse begins to stir. The innards of the crew member burst their way out. They stand still, vigilant.

The Corpuscarii priest swings off the ledge of the tank, landing on the elevator platform as it comes to rest at the top of the doorframe. With fallout still thick in the air, the well shielded and fatally irradiated vanguard charge into the vessel's interior. the Skitarii Alpha uses his power sword to turn the bottom half of the creature into two quarters, slicing down through it's vertebrae and chopping into the waist. Dominus Carnus is right behind them, he keeps the servo skulls at the room's other entrance even though it appears locked from the other side. For a moment, he wishes he had a Genetor with him to tell him what he had just come across. It could be almost anything, likely not a Tyranid though, their blood was a putrid yellow and it's stink never comes out of a robe. The physiology looked human, perhaps a mutation or a bio-weapon of some kind from the age of strife. Quarantines would need to be maintained, and a perimeter established around the site.

The dismembered remains of the skeletal abomination settle on the blood stained floor. All is quiet again for a moment.

Behind one of the skull drones a muffled THUD is heard from inside the top most liquid tank. A murky shape is smashing against the glass.

Back at the skeleton's origin, a small rodent-esque blood construct is wriggling it's way out from under the door.

The priest and the Vanguard Alpha both make it into the adjacent room. Something is scrawled on the chamber wall, a warning, but the Skitarii are not deterred. After putting down whatever beast had charged them, they stomp through the viscera and past the second creature spawning from the body without notice. Glycerius wraps his cut hand in a spare scrap of cloth, stopping it's bleeding for now. Servo skulls pass around him, finding a man's legs hanging out of an air intake. The Dominus brings up the end of the group, taking his time approaching the creature until he is sure it is once again dead.

The small rodent-esque creature scurries away down the hall, it's soft blood-soaked forelimbs skittering to get the most out of the little traction present on the smooth metal floor.

Another THUD is heard as the tank begins to crack under the submerged creature's assault.

Another abomination falls from the remains of a crewmember, unfortunately sucked into the workings of the engine. It writhes around on a ledge.

The cracking glass is drowned out by the sound of fighting as the vanguard Captain chases after the second creature. His Arc pistol sears the bloody trail left in the wake of the escaping pest. The other Skitarii aren't far behind, slipping over guts and the fallen blast door. Dominus Carnus stops at the remains of the first creature, taking samples and scanner readings. The engineering console to his side provides little help to explain the outbreak of this phenomena aboard the ship. The logs and historical record of the vessel appears to have been wiped on purpose. One particular and recent maintenance ticket appears at the top of the stack:

FOREIGN OBJECT DETECTED IN TANK 3

The tech priest's attention is drawn away to the other room, where skull probes have detected a third manifestation. Stopping halfway down the stairs, Glycerius blasts the balcony ahead with his electrode-wrapped gauntlets. He cannot see the creature himself, but listens as it's gruesome form lands with a splash on the railing of the platform.
