Sandbox [Propman's Box of Fairies] Ice-Nine, PW's First Army of Touhous

Hello, and welcome to yet another of my army projects! I originally intended for all the fairies to be put into a single thread, but since I first started writing them they've each evolved into quite distinct different factions, so I'm quite sure none of their army sections would have ever seen the light of day if I didn't split them up. Well then, lets have some music to set the mood, eh?

The Fairies:

Also known as the Fae (alongside the alternate spelling Faeries), the fairies are a race of magical creatures that are known to vary considerably in physical appearance, the most common types being those of winged, humanoid, usually female beings of a small stature with a disposition towards curiosity and mischief, grouping together in large bands in order to preform a myriad of different, often unrelated tasks. Their origins, as well as much about the inner workings of their society remains unknown, which has led to the rise of a large number of myths and legends being ascribed with them, including themselves.

Origins and Occurrence

How the fairies came about is considered formally unknown, and any attempts to ask them themselves on the matter has been met with confusion and funny looks, shortly before the subjects themselves proceeded to flee from the scene with a trail of giggles. One hypothesis is that the fae represent the physical embodiment of nature itself, their powers often tying into natural phenomena such as weather, seasons, and more elemental energies. Other, weirder theories include the possibility of them being an extraterrestrial race of space travelers, originating from either the Moon or a far away planet, having crash-landed on planets like Earth on rocket ships, presumably either scouts sent from their world or travelers attempting to escape it from some reason.

Biology and Physiology

" Fairies live in such phenomena where it gets cold and hot, rain falls and wind blows, grass grows and flowers bloom. They come in various shapes, but many of them are humanoid with wings like those of insects like butterflies and dragonflies. Their height is uniformly small, from the degree where they can fit in the palm of one's hand, up to the size of a child below ten years of age. There is hardly any fairy outside of this scope." - Perfect Memento in Strict Sense on fairies

Fairies range significantly in terms of size and appearance, some of which aren't even humanoid. Of the "civilized" fairies however, there are three main categories of fae, separated by certain characteristics. The first and most common of these is the garden variety Flower Fairy, given their name for their tendency to gather and utilize flowers as tools (though certainly, not all flower fairies possess abilities pertaining to that specific aspect of nature). These fairies are humanoid, child-like female beings that possess one to three pairs of wings, of which often appear to be insectoid in appearance (though among these wing patterns, other types can arise as in the case of elemental fairies). Their size ranges from anywhere between being small enough to fit into a bottle, to roughly as tall as a ten-year old human child, a variable which shall be taken into greater detail bellow. Particularly young fairies of this type are recognized by having disproportionately short legs as well as an even more childish appearance, the latter often giving the appearance of having their feet attached to their torso under their dresses and large shoes.

The second type of fairy common among these groups is the Leprechaun (colloquially often shortened to Chaun), which forms virtually the entirety of the fairy male population. These fae are further signified by their lack of wings and hardier frames, allowing them to preform rough tasks such as working with the earth, making them ideal for use in heavier industries despite the crippling disability their lack of flight entails. Though most leprechauns have a similar, childish look to their female counterparts, a non-insignificant amount of them can have the appearance of adults and older men sporting beards and mustaches, though this often leads to a dwarf-like form due to their proportions.

The final variant, the Great Fairies (Great Chaun in the case of Leprechauns), are considered by some to be more of a life stage shared between the other two types. These fairies are taller and more developed versions of their peers, often appearing as young adults in both size and shape, with amplified physical and magical abilities to match. Unsurprisingly, these fairies often find themselves in charge of leading their "lesser" kin, becoming Fairy Queens and Leprechaun Kings, or other lesser forms of nobility. It is not known what causes a fairy to become "great", nor whether they begin their lives that way or can "promote" into great fairies from the more basic fae.

An in depth look into the workings of these types of fairy reveals many interesting implications behind their physiology. The wings of the varieties that have them in particular are shown to often be attached to their bodies only indirectly, some variants floating freely from their backs with no points of attachment even among their clothing. These wings can manifest in shapes separate from conventional types, including structures of the element they represent, such as wings made out of ice, fire, or light, to even inaerodynamic forms such as cubes or crystals. Nevertheless, a fairy without wings cannot fly, and even leprechauns with clear magical capabilities are shown to be unable to form wings, forcing them earthbound without external aid.

Pure iron is shown to be highly toxic to fairies, and is shown to have disfiguring qualities when pressed against them as well as disrupt their magical abilities. Without their magic, fairies life spans are shown to be far shorter then that of a human, often failing within twenty years of time from newborn age to elderly. The "old man" leprechaun that is often stereotypically depicted by humanity is thought to be the result of leprechaun smiths and soldiers exposing themselves to iron for extended periods as part of their crafts, disrupting the magics that maintain their youthful appearance and degenerating them as a result as the minutes they expose themselves add up into years. The amount of time it takes for such to set in means that these elder chauns truly reflect their age; Many an older king has been a soldier in the past, and thus it is considered normal for some chauns to have this appearance.

As a result of their innate magic abilities, fairies are effectively ageless: A fairy might age from being a baby to possibly eventually becoming the young adult-like great fairies, but will hardly ever appear to age beyond this point, and will not suffer from internal biological issues such as cancer or heart disease. They can often recover from grievous injuries so long as it does not kill them, a trait which helps offset their otherwise frail bodies. Fairies from Earth in particular are mostly immune to being killed by conventional means, only dying when the nature that supported them itself was destroyed. In spite of this, pure iron was still lethal to them, and was used to great effect in the Grand War conflict on Earth, giving these fae a fear of death that they lacked prior. Else, the fact that they can't normally die doesn't necissarly mean that they want to die; many a fairy has been killed on a foreign planet only to respawn months later, with no way to go home. These fairies effectively become stranded.

Fairies are shown to not need to eat when under the continued exposure of the sun, possibly implying that they possess a type of photosynthesis, but will usually do so anyways out of habit. Notably, most female fae are shown to contract a form of sickness when left underground for any extended period of time, preventing them from living in such conditions while leprechauns tend to thrive. This is reflected in how their castes often work: Chauns will often preform tasks such as mining, forging, and metalworking, while fairies preform surface tasks such as farming and gathering.

The fairies originating in Earth particular are known to not reproduce conventionally in spite of having genders as well as seemingly the biological characteristics needed to do so from a glance. Instead, they increase in number by increasing the strength of whatever aspect of nature they represent: for instance, a Leprechaun's element is gold, so if a bunch of gold is piled into a single area, another leprechaun might eventually spawn. In reverse, if an element is depleted, fairies that rely on it to exist might "decommission", or vanish. This in turn means that many Earth originating fairy groups will often use their powers to cover the surface of worlds with things such as ice, flowers, or water in order to further their numbers, and left unchecked, might unwittingly ruin or even destroy a world's ecosystem and habitability for other forms of life.

Psychology and Behavior

As a race, fairies are considered to be fairly simple minded in thinking and action: Not unintelligent by any degree, but slow witted, with a tendency towards short-sightedness and acting on instinct over reason. Fairies might steal something that they find interesting and prank somebody (a pass-time shared with leprechauns) when they think it's funny without any ill-will intended, but also without any consideration for how others would react to their actions. Great fairies are often wise enough to act beyond these impulses, which is necessary as otherwise their civilizations wouldn't be able to function beyond small disjointed clans.

As evidenced by the above, fairies often clump into large groups, which if given structure at all, will be organized through a loose hierarchy composed of Great Fairies fulfilling a variety of administrative and other positions to keep their peoples together in loose city-state like entities, which occasionally are combined further in order to create loose confederations. These groupings are often dictated by factors such as appearance, elemental ability, and sometimes even gender; A state of fairies of purely one type is the most common, followed by single-gender fairy/chaun communities (who often pair themselves up with a related group of the opposite gender to act as a sort of binary federation ruled by a queen and king), and identical appearances, such as a civilization of purely blue-haired fae.

Fairies are attracted to magic: Areas where magical forces grow strong are prone to subconsciously compel fae to gather nearby, stronger forces still causing them to fall into a trance that enthralls them to their base instincts, and large gatherings of their kind away from their direct domains usually signify a powerful force nearby.

An interesting behavior unique to chauns is the hoarding of wealth; Every leprechaun will have a cauldron or pot dedicated to the storage of golden objects in his steed somewhere. One possible reasoning behind this is that gold is the source of their power, and that the more gold a leprechaun hoards, the bigger and stronger he becomes. Certainly all known leprechaun kings are rich in wealth.


Fairies often group together in mostly ad-hoc "kingdoms" (though with their usually limitless lifespans, it is very rare for a succession to actually occur), city-states which are ruled by either a queen, "princess", or rarely a king whom depending on the size of the city may be accompanied by a nobility formed of other great fairies, working in junction with the ruler to preform administrative actions and keep their lands in functional condition. Lacking the rule of a great fairy, it is possible for smaller communities of fae to either live alongside another sentient race such as an elvish community, or in a few rare cases use a non-fae being as the ruling figure, like a human. Failing this even, fairies will often live in disjointed groups within forests based on friend and kinship, living either nomadicly or semi-sedintarily.

Science and Technology

" One might think that a society composed of immortal beings, like fairies are, would accumulate experience and expertise much faster than mortal societies and as such skyrocket ahead of their peers in technological, cultural, and military advancement. However, fairies spend almost all their time playing around and trying to directly command them for any length of time is like herding cats with attention-deficit disorder, so it all balances out. Across worlds and even civilizations, fae technology can vary considerably between bronze age equipment to rocket-propelled space ships, to heavily magic-based technology that has no known human analogs. Almost universal among fairies is advanced textile working, and even the most primitive of fae communities will often be capable of creating dresses and coats rivaling that of the best works produced by humans, while shoe making is an art that has been mastered by the leprechauns. Steel working is ubiquitous among the more advanced fairy civilizations, but the caustic properties of ironworking among the fae means that it's usually limited to smaller quantities in situations where its high strength is absolutely required, and most other metal used by the fae consists of copper alloys such as bronze.

is known to be one of the few technologies grasped by almost every fairy civilization that expands to a point of stability; fairies would appear to be innately knowledgeable to some instinctual degree of the inner workings of such devices, and can assemble primitive rockets even with little prior industry. As a result, most fae small arms utilize rocket-propelled bullets in some form.


As magical creatures, all fae possess some talent that utilizes this enigmatic force though manifestation of certain natural (some would say "supernatural") abilities. On an individual basis, most fairies only have weak magical ability, decent enough to perhaps pull a prank, but lacking in the sheer force that one would find in say, a psyker or wizard. Great fairies with practice can potentially utilize their basic magic in a more offensive matter, but their scarcity means that using them as such is rarely a good idea, a few niche cases notwithstanding.

Regardless of the weaknesses of an individual fairy, large groupings of fae can generate large amounts of raw magical energy, which they subconsciously use in order to warp reality to better suit their perceptions, a trait that is important not only in keeping certain areas habitable, but in many cases to keep their technology working reliably. As an example, the "Daisy Chain", a term used to describe the internet of Ice-Nine, is composed of various secondhand CPUs (largely ACP-IIIs and other variants of the PC-98) scavenged and bartered from humans and connected to one another haphazardly with wiring as interpreted by fae scientists and engineers. Believing that they have achieved a feat similar to humanity, the magical aura they emit takes the place of the electronic sorting process normally needed in order for such a setup to work, and hence the Daisy Chain is able to function in spite of being nothing being a mess of wires.

Spell Cards
are both a weapon and a pass-time used by the fairies (less commonly the chauns, who find such events inmasculine) in order to conduct a sport known as Danmaku Fighting. These cards revolve around firing set patterns of bullets in distinct formations, with the premise of the competition being to dodge as many of the opposing sides' bullets as possible while forcing the opposing side to make contact with your own. Though non-lethal in their basic state, some modified versions of these cards have been developed to meet outside threats, and can be deployed against foes in a rain of magic that is as elegant as it is terrifying to face.

Queendom of Ice Nine:

Based on the moon of Jupiter, known as Europa, a place which they lived on for over a century since they were exiled from Earth around 2021, the Queendom of Ice Nine (alternatively Ice-Nine) controls the whole surface of the frozen world as they use technology reverse engineered from 22nd century humanity as well as gratuitous amounts of magic in order to explore the galaxy for more frozen, icy bodies to claim, as well as resources to take back to their own derelict capital world. Highly secretive to aliens, many times an Ice Nine expedition will come and leave a planet before the locals even notice they were ever there. On occasion however, errors in judgement and record keeping lead to issues such as claiming an already inhabited world, transforming a habituated world into a frozen sphere, or sending a caravan of traders into the middle of nowhere. Though they're rarely openly hostile, the arguably careless nature of the ice fairies means that they've made lots of accidental enemies, enemies which they often neglect to recognize until they're pounding at Europa's doorstep.

Spoiler: Prelude (Proverbial Trainwreck of Text Ahead)

(Note: Though I've tried to simplify this section a bit as I've recognized virtually nobody on this board knows a lick about Touhou, lots of the things explain here are somewhat difficult to understand without an understanding of that series' lore. For that, I apologize!)

Early History

The fairies were originally a quite simple race. For most of their existence, they were simple, childish manifestations of nature that were an enigma in a world full of humans and youkai (magical creatures of Japanese folklore that eat people): They're not quite youkai, and lack some of the more distasteful traits associated with the mystical creatures (though some would argue this is merely because they lack the physical strength to do so) so most "true" youkai would shun and hate to be compared to them. Yet though they're one of the more sympathetic "non-human" creatures of the setting, their behavior is foreign enough that most humans lump them with the former anyway, something that would be accepted for years. Like most magical creatures, they lived in boarders cut off from the "mundane" world, with a curious limitation in that no boarder that contained male fae contained any females, and vice-versa. Though the exact reasons for this were unknown, it is presumed to have a connection with the fact that fairies don't reproduce biologically, in spite of having genders.

One of the borders near Ireland eventually broke due to a civil war between the assigned border keeper who abused his god-given powers, and the Leprechaun chaunate living there who were until recently serving to keep his regime under control along with other western fae and fantastic creatures. Having suffered a century of abuse from their cruel leader, these fae had overcome their normal limitation of a short memory span by manually writing down each and every thing that happened to them every day in order to try and make sure they didn't permanently end up tricked under the so called border druid's influence. Utilizing the technological debris that had fallen into the boarder from the outside world, and with the help of other heroes and beings sick of his abuses of power, they managed to fell him after the gods themselves judge him too corrupt for his duties.

Though at first rejoicing, the lack of a border keeper ultimately spelled catastrophe to their magical enclave, collapsing it in the process. Through chance alone (though some would say outside forces also played a part), a large chunk of the leprechaun race ended up transported into Gensokyo, a boarder located in Japan, as a failsafe measure to keep them contained from the normal outside world. At first, the chaunate have a difficult time blending in with the native populace: Most of them cannot speak the native language (though, partially offset in that a decent number of fairies know how to speak English, if not write it), and are ill-adapted to contend with the societal norms or customs of Gensokyo, leading them to be shunned by youkai and humans alike, generally seeming massively out of place and weird to them (much like the hobgoblins before them).

Luckily, in due no small part to an icy fairy named Cirno (self proclaimed "Strongest of the fairies") accepting a group of them in as assistants after instinctively figuring out that they're fairies (a bit very strange fairies), relations between the two categories of fae started to slowly thaw within the next few years as they figure out that despite being a whole continent away, they still shared a large amount of interests and customs, and by around the 130th cycle, they have more or less assimilated with the the fairies to the point where they acknowledge each other as kin, though, the purpose of them being of opposite sexes mostly goes over their heads beyond the fact that fairies are meant to act "girly", and chauns are meant to act "manly", as well as the fact that only the former has wings.

In spite of this, most youkai with some fringe exceptions like the Scarlet Devil Mansion and Garden of the Sun still viewed the chauns with contempt, especially now that their presence meant that the fae significantly outnumbered almost everything else in Gensokyo, giving them a disproportionate amount of power while also causing them to encroach on Youkai lands in numbers far greater then what was deemed acceptable. Humans continued to loathe them for being outsiders (though a small shoe-making trade develops between the two, and chauns figure that humanity makes a good source of gold, effectively their elemental affinity), especially now that the fairies work in tandem with chauns' to make more complex and annoying pranks then ever before. They petition Reimu to exterminate them, but the best she can do is relocate them to areas where they're less likely to cause immediate trouble.

Things reached their zenith when the buildup of fairy-youkai loathing reaches their breaking point, and youkai start to attack fairies in ways normally only reserved for humans, going as far as to destroy their flower fields and raid their gold vaults, sending some of them out of commission in an effort to cull their population. Expecting the fae to remain a weak non-threat, they failed to realize that the chaunate foresaw them attacking long before, and the fae had contracted the kappa and humans as well as used their own knowledge learned from the previous conflict in order to silently arm themselves in the case a conflict would arise. And thus, the Fairy-Youkai War began.

The Grand War

Initially, the impact the two sides had on each other were minimal, despite the fact that the spellcard system was thrown out of the window (much to the Shrine Maiden who made them's chagrin). Most of the weapons either side possessed dealt little actual damage to the agressors themselves beyond destroying their property and ravanging the landscape, and most fairies unaccustomed to the horrors of a real war assumed it was just another game, similar to the usually non-lethal incidents that had occurred in the past. One could say that beyond the initial attack, it was hardly a true war at all.

Frustrated at their lack of progress, The youkai eventually started searching for ways to more permanently deal with the fae without resorting to burning down their own forests. They interrogated humans, spirits, and anyone that could possibly possess any knowledge on the matter. A few disgruntled magicians eventually offered to experiment for them, by chance coming across a weakness: 100% pure Fe, known by some as cold iron. Such a metal possessed magic-canceling properties, and could sever a fairy's connection from the elements that kept them undying.

Using this knowledge in battle, the youkai were now cutting down their enemies with terrifying efficiency. At first angered, the fey soon learned to fear the Youkai as they rudely and violently shattered their perceptions of life and death over the course of a month, horrifying the fairies which had until then little concept of a "permanent" death. As a response to these new attacks, the fey delve ever deeper into the realm of technology, bringing out machines such as tanks and explosives in order to combat the youkai with overwhelming industrial might, hoping to emulate what the Lunarians (a race of advanced humans that lived on the moon) did during the Lunar War and humanity did during the start of the 20th century, overpowering them with machines. A secondary movement included appealing to the humans, who until then mostly acted as spectators to the event, but were known to be deeply distrusting of the youkai. Many humans, seeing at how terribly the fairies were being persecuted, as well as looking for an excuse to exterminate the youkai, join arms, and fight for the fairies' side.

Now desperate after facing defeats against the decidedly not so weak fairies, the belligerent youkai also appeal to humanity, other youkai civilizations (like the Kappa and Tengu, who remained neutral to the conflict), and even the gods themselves. Opinions varied wildly: Some thought that they had brought it on themselves, while others shared their sentiment in thinking the fairies had gotten out of hand. The shrine maiden who was sworn to watch over the barrier had watched from both sides, and was convinced that the best way to achieve balance was to remove the fairies, though she deeply resented the thought of committing genocide against them, and hoped to first draw an end to the war. And so, humans joined both sides, some led by the shrine maiden, and some lead by other parties. More human factions still joined for their own reasons, but the conflict now involved just about every party in Gensokyo. The Fairy-Youkai War would merge into a series of conflicts known as the Grand War ("Great Incident" to the humans).

The previously simplistic fairies would undergo a metamorphosis into a conglomerate of factions working under a common interest and lay the foundations for the first structured forms of government through a chain of command, utilizing organized tactics and even propaganda in order to unite themselves into a single order. This order, known as the "Great Fairy Alliance", encompassed fairies of all types across the area, including those led by youkai who were either sympathetic to them or using them as a means to combat their rivals. Nevertheless, the Alliance was always somewhat factionalized, even with a unified purpose at hand, and such a level of organization among the fae placed great mental strain on their rather simplistic minds. The Youkai were now acting towards their more animalistic tendencies now that they had nothing to hold back against. Some consulted with the Demons of Makai and Former Hell in order to bolster their ranks; terrible creatures were released from under the earth that were more then a match for the machines that the fairies brought forth.

Whole landscapes would be changed over the matter of days as an orgy of natural disasters, artillery shelling, rampant magic, and other wanton destruction collided. Appeals to end the matter through the shrine maiden, who was now facing the toughest incident of her entire life, would initially fail, and it would not be until a battle takes place at the very footstep of her shrine that the war finally comes to a halt. The first event to cause the Alliance to question their actions was known as the "Drinking of the Forbidden Blood". A group of leprechaun soldiers, in a bid to become stronger after being pinned by a faction of demons, appealed to a rogue vampire who took pity on them, and offered them her blood in return for destroying the monsters. Initially reluctant, these chauns drank the blood, transforming them into youkai known as Redcaps in the process. Though stronger than any fairy or human, it came at the cost of their sanity, and they killed both daemon and fairy alike in their bid of bloodlust, destabilizing the front and striking a huge blow in morale. They were now the very youkai they had sworn to hunt, and were killing the sisters they swore to defend. Other fairy factions were against the alliance for other reasons.

Throughout the war, a significant minority of fairies remained loyal to the youkai they served for years, including the few leprechauns that found themselves accepted into their folds prior to the war. These "rebels", as the fairies loyal "themselves" would call them, would end up skirmishing with their kin early on in the war, but never to the point of permanent death, at worst harassing them in a manner akin to the Great Fairy War (no longer called that in modern speech: The Grand War redefined the meaning of the term) of the past.

This changed during the Battle of Hakurei Bridge, where the rebel chauns had taken arms against their brother chauns in order to prevent them from doing what they viewed as transforming Gensokyo into the same horrible wasteland that the Northern Border they left became, fully accepting the fact that they would be exterminated afterward at the promise that the "native" fairies would be left alone. Both sides found themselves applying iron to their own weapons, and chaun started slaying chaun. This single battle would be where the largest number of fae would end up going out of commission at once in the entire war, and eventually, after the blood of thousands stained the rivers a crimson red, and the skies were red with smoke, the two sides would give in, the loyalists reasoning that if they were going to fight each other, they were already on the path to extermination. The Grand War had ended, after four years of devastation.


the so called "Treaty of 136" was written up a week later, named after the 136th cycle in which the war ended. The leprechauns and many fairies were, rather then slaughtered, exiled to the moon of Jupiter, known as Europa, and were only allowed to visit Gensokyo in a set amount nine times each year during certain holidays. A handful of chauns' managed to hide in the wilds, or seek refuge in areas such as the Scarlet Devil Mansion without being taken, but they were now a minority.

The spellcard system was reinstated, though it became clear that the shrine maiden alone was not sufficient to enforce it, so a new group consisting of her entrusted allies arose in order to police Gensokyo to prevent such a war from ever happening again. Finally, the "wild" youkai were now on a tighter leash then before in spite of their victory, and additional restrictions on their activity were written up to allow them to settle disputes without having to resort to lethal violence, though these would often be tested in the future.

In the aftermath of the war, much of Gensokyo's landscape was permanently altered, while machines created by man, kappa, or fae roamed the lands as a new hazard. Large-profile incidents had become less common (though, some would reason this is due to more minor incidents becoming ignored), but in their place, the wilds remained an even more perilous place to venture. Many evil spirits had been aroused, and the restless dead haunted many a battlefield, while demons roamed the most vile corners of the land, and the redcaps remained at large, ever eager to kidnap unwary fairies and turn them into more of their number. Nevertheless, some good came out of the war. Youkai were generally more docile, and were more willing to cooperate with the humans, who were slightly less distrusting of them after having fought along their side. Their relationships with the fae slowly repaired, and rather soon the latter went back to preforming their pranks on them. Gensokyo was many steps closer to modernization with vast improvements in the fields of medical and manufacturing technology made, and the fairies were now organized into nation states, to be filled with a more active purpose as well as a higher intelligence (though some still hoped to reject this and revert to a pre-war state.)

Even those on Europa got the chance to visit the border multiple times each cycle, while the vast majority of ice fairies that chose to go there, along with the chaunate, would eventually forge an empire far greater then anything they would hope to find in their condensed spot on Earth as they had the moon to themselves. This empire would eventually be known as Ice-Nine.

Ice-Nine: Creation of A Civilization

About 98% of Gensokyo's leprechaun population and 40% of its fairy populace were deported onto the surface of the frozen moon of Jupiter, Europa, as decreed by a powerful youkai known as Yukari. It was chosen for the fact that it was presumed to be the easiest of all nearby extraplanar bodies to be made suitable for ice fairy life, and the fey were dumped there with a select amount of foliage, dirt, and animals taken from remote parts of the world, all supported under magical barrier similar in design to those on Earth in order to make the relativity small area habitable for fairy life. Though given the option to stay, Cirno, along with her senior fairy and trusted adviser Daiyousei, both decided in a bout of maturity rarely seen in a fairy that since they were the ones that organized the fairies into a civilization in the first place, they would lead the exiled fey; few would argue against it, as the ice fairy was the first being to show the leprechauns compassion when they were stranded in Gensokyo in the first place, while the other ice fairies had already worked under her banner in prior incidents, and were at first overjoyed in having a whole planet of ice to themselves. Thus, Cirno was elected as lady and the concept of nationalism took root as the ice fairies formed the Ladyship of Ice-Nine. This name was chosen for the significance the number nine had with the lady, but it also came to possess a more symbolic meaning in the future; many ice fairy colonization attempts in the space age have led to the whole freezing of the biosphere of multiple small planetoids in order to increase the amount of ice for ice fairies.

Far before such a time however, the initial settling of Cirnopolis (later renamed Breccia) was to say the least quite a monumental task for a race who had prior little form of organized civilization. Ques were taken from humanity as best as possible, and the fairies used their own interpretations of architecture in order to best make use of what little room they had on the icy planet. Crude igloos gave way to massive towers and spires of ice as recorded years of trial and error eventually yielded results, while underground complexes were constructed by the chauns; first into the soil, then the living ice that the rest of the surface was made out of, eventually reaching the vast underground ocean beneath the moon's surface. Though beings attuned to ice, fairies still needed some form of heat to live, and metal was also still required, not only for war machines, but for the more nuanced devices of fey life that could no longer be easily stolen from humans. Great factories were erected near the edge of the boarder, their smokestacks extending outside of it and bellowing smoke out into the endless frozen wastes, away from sight and mind, fueled by magically grown timber and coal (as they were ice fairies and leprechauns, rather than air fairies which would be concerned with such practices).

Though technology, both mundane and magical was slow to develop, a few tricks were learned, and the fairies were secretly opening up portals back to Earth in order to snatch more resources for their own limited slice of their world, while also slowly industrializing. In the meantime, they also discovered wondrous creatures native to Europea hiding in the deeps, sparking a curiosity that led to the need for greater production capabilities in order to build vessels able to explore the moon outside of their little bubble. Pretty soon, tanks were rolling off of the floors of manufacturies, modified to be sealed in order to give those inside the ability to patrol outside of the boarder, while submarines meant for long expeditions cruised beneath the thick continents of ice.

Though there wasn't much of a need for an actual military at first, "scouting expeditions" of armed chauns and fairies were sent to Earth for various reasons, as Europa often got rather boring for many fae who were used to the diversity of the "old world". These scouting expeditions eventually evolved into a standing army as the lady attempted to recapture small parts of her former homeland so as to give the ice fairies a permanent anchor on Earth; merely 9 visits a year was surely not enough! Several attempts had been made to capture parts or all of Gensokyo over the decades in conflicts including the Second Ethanol War and the Toad Wars, which both served to give the fairy army experience in fighting. The former was ultimately inconclusive so far as the role the ice fairies played, while the latter only ended when the lady herself went down in order to topple a 40 foot tall machine built by the locals to eliminate the fairies once and for all (though conflicting reports say that it was possibly a witch that destroyed the machine, or the conventional Ice-Nine armoured forces). Nevertheless, rather then risk the chance of a full on second Grand War, the aging shrine maiden eventually allowed a small embassy settlement to be placed near Misty Lake, the original home of Cirno. Since then, the relations between Gensokyo and Ice-Nine have been peaceful, allowing the military to set its sights on something greater.

Modern Ice-Nine

Since the Grand War, Ice-Nine, under the leadership of Lady Cirno, has spent most of its time making the surface of its world not just habitable for fairy kind, but comfortable. The treaty of 136 has been threaded on multiple times during the Second Ethanol War and Toad Wars when the Ice-Nine military was sent down on their lady's whims, the second war nearly threatening to erupt into a second grand war as the fairies reclaimed Misty Lake under Ice Nine rule as an anchor to the old world. Else, most of their interactions with their old homelands revolve around trading objects such as food, plants, and even dirt in order to slowly transform Europa into something other than a ball of ice. Advances in technology and magic mean that occasionally, spaceships can be afforded to be sent off to search for resources from far off worlds to bring back to the frozen moon. This has eventually led to both the discovery of aliens as well as other fairies that had supposedly developed on worlds of their own. How these groups will interact remains to be seen, but a few trades in technology between the latter have taken place in the mean time.

Ice Nine Military:

Fairies aren't generally known for being militaristic, and Ice Nine's army is relatively young at just a century and a half. Nevertheless, many of its numbers are seasoned veterans of past conflicts, and are a few notches craftier then your garden variety fey, so one should take care not to underestimate them, lest they be frozen solid. Most fairy tactics revolve around what's flashy and most beautiful to look at, rather then what's necessarily the most practical; a holdover from the times when spellcard duels were the predominant means of resolving conflicts. That's not to say that they aren't highly dangerous; a sky saturated with danmaku is treacherous for any aircraft to navigate in, especially for modern jets that often do not possess the acrobatic ability needed to bypass such concentrated waves of energy, or would otherwise be blinded by forces such as lasers.

On the ground, the leprechauns dominate most operations, and their tactics are accordingly simple, blunt, and efficient in contrast to their sisters; they have to be, as fey are poor at memorizing complex plans. They'll utilize armoured vehicles and explosives heavily in order to offset their physical frailty compared to humanity, and are known to use their equipment for the most unorthodox purposes.

Together, these two groups make up a highly unpredictable military force, and what they lack in focus or tactical knowledge, they easily make up in numbers; fairies are both numerous and virtually immortal, rarely suffering permanent losses on the field and always attacking with the bulk of their forces. Meanwhile, their lack of the need to eat means that they can continue marching with far fewer supplies then any human force, though such tends to damage their morale as well as weakens their combat efficiency; long marches without food do still tire them.

It is to be noted that most of Ice-Nine's military is not a standing army; fairies might fight for a few months and get bored, only to change jobs to something else. This means that there are always new recruits in spite of the low fatality rate, while those who continuously spend their lives in the military tend to develop quirks in regards to their disposition, as seen in many chaunic officers.

Basic Units and Variants:

Leprechaun footsoldiers fight with the 100% devotion of their lady, as she was the one who accepted them as her own when all others met them with scorn. Though both underequipped and weak physically compared to most contemporary human forces, their bravery and expandability gives them many merits, while a certain degree of cunning earned over a century of fighting has given them a few tricks up their sleeves to utilize. Don't underestimate these ankle-biters!

The average Ice-Nine infantrychaun is equipped with a semi-automatic gyro-rifle capable of firing short bursts of either "microjets", small rockets which explode upon embedding themselves into a target, or magical icicles which pierce and impale those they hit. The weapon is designed to give as little recoil as possible while being light weight, for fairy use. Though noted for having dubious accuracy for man-sized targets in spite of one of its main features being the range at which the rocket remains lethal, the explosive nature of the weapons invariably mean devastation to targets many times the chauns' own size when they do make contact, while the weapon is also relatively silent, fired shots only making a hushed "psh" sound.

With the inclusion of an Officer, it is possible for a unit of Infantry to be made up of Veteran Gyrochauns; professional soldiers that have been fighting since at least the Toad Wars and are as sharp in battle as their leader, wearing a distinct white uniform to set them apart from standard soldiers. They also prefer the traditional older model of mundane gyrojet from their peers, each gun customly tailored to suit the individual soldier's needs in spite of their less sophisticated nature.

Long before meeting the fairies, leprechauns had a knack for making things blow up as part of their own brand of pranking against humans, among other operations such as mining gold ore or leaving a nasty surprise to those who sought to cheat them. Though not great at magic, some chauns were particularly gifted in pyrotechnics, allowing them to contribute to the Grand War through creating landmines and other nasty devices, if not volunteer themselves as sappers who would literally walk into the enemy with explosives strapped to them; they could respawn, after all.

Though such practices have since been discouraged, chauns remain no more a stranger to all things that go boom, and over the years they have experimented with the magic of their sisters in order to form a wide array of new explosives to satisfy their itch. The most notable of these bombs among Ice-Nine include the ice grenade, first developed during the end of the Second Ethanol War, and then put to wide practice during the Toad Wars, in which the bombs were used to freeze ponds in order to form bridges, as well as flush out the amphibious menace from their dwellings. Such creative use of these explosives have allowed the Ice-Nine grenadiers to act something similar to military engineers, using both ice and conventional bombs in order to shape the terrain to their liking.

Some grenadiers are equipped with the increasingly common Shoe-Gun; the name given for the ultralight-weight rocket-propelled grenade launcher which over doubles the grenadier's effective range at the cost of lowering his rate of fire and reaction, and an optional gyropistol side-arm which gives the chaun a chance to defend himself in situations where he cannot safely detonate a bomb.

Armed with a pike and garbed in plate armor that doubles their bodyweight, guardschauns are more mobile blocks of cover then they are effective soldiers in most situations, often being ill suited for most of the conflicts that take place during the 22nd century in regards to their archaic equipment, being mostly reserved for ceremonial roles as well as acting as law enforcers (for whatever loose definition of law fairies have, anyway). Guardschauns nevertheless take their jobs very seriously; for if they do manage to somehow be victorious, they might eventually gain notice of the lady herself, who might promote them into knights, which while still wearing heavy armor, have access to magic most other leprechauns wouldn't dream of using.

"Infantry" is used here only in the most general term, as flower fairies tend to make poor conventional soldiers, lacking the discipline, endurance, and often temperament needed to be practical in the field, and only taking over the chauns' roles in cases of emergency. They make great skirmishers and scouts however, and form the largest part of the Ice-Nine fairy army. Most fairies view war as another form of game, especially given their ability to respawn, and are as much concerned about having "fun" fighting as they are actually accomplishing objectives.

Your basic ice fairy can fly in the air as gracefully as a bird, and is nimble enough to dodge even the occasional bullet (of the conventional kind) if given the initiative, though not sustained fire. She can fire both conventional danmaku, which though is only as damaging as throwing a large marble at a human target, is destructively corrosive against metal and other inorganic materials, eating through a tank's armor in sustained waves, as well as specialized ice pellets, which freeze what they hit and though are less singularly destructive against vehicles (provided they don't hit the vehicles enough times to disable them through freezing), will cause frostburn on flesh and are generally more effective at killing, though a single bullet is still hardpressed to down a man.

Sunflower Fairies are a breed of flower fairy who carry rather large flowers in their arms as a focus for their danmaku, often a sunflower or daisy. A mainstray of the fairies of Gensokyo, these fey are less common on Ice-Nine then icy types for reasons regarding the climate, but a good deal of them migrated over to the frozen moon both during and after the initial settlement period, and remain irregulars among the Ice Fairy Army. Compared to common scouts, Sunflower Fairies are slightly more responsive in the midst of battle, able to fire off more complex bullet patterns as well as preform basic evasive maneuvers to avoid projectiles. They're most often seen as part of a spring herald's entourage.
Artillery/Heavy Weapons Team

Curiously, despite most groundbound forces being the domain of the leprechauns alone, almost every heavy weapon that isn't vehicle-mounted is crewed by flower fairies. Such a case is the result of the fact that heavy weapons can be utilized by fairies in order to light the sky with heavy ordinance, a trait which they seek to use as part of their elaborate light shows.

The most popular Ice-Nine piece of artillery is the M1909 Mountain Fairy Cannon, a weapon reverse-engineered from old human technology found rusting away in the woods during the Grand War. A 76 mm weapon, it fires both conventional explosive shells (which require multiple fairies to heft due to their weight) and danmaku waves for limited AA capabilities.

Ice Fairies are notoriously poor at math, and hence it isn't uncommon for a team to miscalculate their trajectory and wildly miss their intended target; they compensate by using shells with a wider spread then usual, though this also makes them quite unsafe to use in situations where friendly units are also in range.

Before you say a word, Touhou is not an anime. It is a game series revolving around girls shooting other girls with very colourful bullets, and occasionally men shooting other men in manly futuristic spess-jets over cactus.

And yep, the Cat's Cradle Ice-Nine. Since ice fairies reproduce by covering the surface of the world in ice, if taken to its logical conclusion and left unchecked, they'd eventually freeze the surface of it in order to maximize their "ice pool", with some controlled planetoids being nothing but frozen-over asteroids to give mass to their power base. In practice however, a world actually inhabited by them rarely gets frozen over due to the fact that a 100% ice world is not only boring to live in, but also impossible for them to actually survive in if it doesn't have things such as a breathable atmosphere and non sub-zero temperatures. They're actually trying to make their homeworld not a frozen deathworld of metre-tall ice spires by slowly terraforming it, as well as one can with shoddy magic and 20th century orkoid (a bit prettified)-technology.

The cubes are really meant to be centralized around the more Kirbyish fariy armies, where they're the only type of vehicle, and the non-block vehicles more exist for lore purposes. When I first had an idea for the fairies as an army, they were my goto concept for what a fairy AFV would look like, using SMB3 and Steamlands as inspiration.

Officers and HQs:

Knight, Veteran Knight

Guards that show particular skill and above average intelligence might eventually find themselves given a room within the massive tower of ice that serves as the capital city of the ice fairy nation, where they are retrained in the use of magic; a rarity among the chauns. Decedents of the "Marshall" class of field officer that first appeared during the Toad Wars, Knights are an elite branch of soldiers whom carry the Lady's will in their blades and spells, fighting in her steed whenever needed. Compared to fairies, most of the spellcards and techniques they prefer have to do with either augmenting their abilities or forming barriers in order to block projectiles, allowing them to either support their forces or close the distance against the enemy in order to engage them in melee. Common spells include Cold Body "Super Ice Kick", Ice Cube "Great Crusher", cards originally pioneered by the lady herself (though, contrary to their original use, the latter card is often used to form barriers rather then crush the enemy), and Blizzard Sign: Blinding White, an ability that makes a vision-obstructing cloud of frost.

They can use their ice kick to leap considerable distances in a roughly "L" shaped movement to place themselves into enemy lines and cause disarray with the latter ability, and maintain an impressive amount of agility in spite of the cumbersome nature of their plate armor. Their shields can block most energy-based attacks as well as lighter firearms, but remain dubious against high-powered rifles and other such weapons. Their armor defends against most conventional bladed weapons, also offers some protection against blunt implements, as well as primitive guns, but little else.

As a command unit, they prefer to lead and instruct inexperienced guards and work alongside fellow knights; gunpowder infantry share at times an unfriendly rivalry with their magic using brothers, mocking such acts [the use of spellcards] as feminine and dainty. In spite of this, a well-revered Veteran Knight (often signified by wearing an older model of armor) is respected by all chauns, and can lead even rocketeers as well as store an additional spellcard into their arsenal, gleaned from a catalog of either ice or light spells. Both types enjoy the company of fairies (the former more then their fellow infantry chauns), but even a veteran would be hard-pressed to actively lead their sisters with the differences in tactics and mentalities.

Most knights seem to possess a sense of honor; they won't go out of their way to attack, or even prank bystanders and expect those under their command to do the same, and will often hesitate to attack targets that they don't immediately know to be hostile.
Maid, Head Maid

The fairy maids of Gensokyo have a long and colorful history as the servants of the elusive mistress of the Scarlet Devil Mansion. Decades of experience with incidents as well as conflicts such as the First Ethanol War and Grand War have made them smarter, stronger, and better coordinated than their less focused sisters. Evidently, these conflicts have also caused their numbers to swell as more maids were recruited to preform duties eventually overtaken by the hobgoblins, and later the leprechauns.

The Maid Corps of Ice-Nine is the result of a group maids from the Scarlet Devil Mansion leaving their original employer for varied reasons; many were horrified by the experiments conducted on their kind with their mistresses' consent in the creation of the Redcap race of youkai and left in fear and disgust, while others fled in order to stay in contact with their friends that had been exiled under the Treaty of 136. Still more wished to leave for the distant moon in order to explore it, hoping to see the universe outside of Gensokyo. Whatever their reason, their mistress did little to oppose them, taking the period herself in order to review her morality (as well as thin out the mansion's then overcrowded populace), and soon the maids would find their skills being of use under a new mistresses; one of these being the Fairy Queen.

The standard fairy Maid is more clever and resourceful than her uneducated sisters; she can deduce moderately complex logical problems, understands how physics work to a limited extent, and is both literate and recording her experiences on a journal/diary to retain her memories (a trait adapted from the leprechauns) meaning that unlike her peers, she'll more often then not learn from her mistakes. She can command lesser fairies to move and attack in a disciplined formation, and she herself will often have a spellcard or two drawn from a diverse pool depending on her assigned situation, though as ice fairies, Ice-Nine maids will usually come with Frozen Sign "Freeze Atmosphere". In addition, most maids can built structures and function as workers, sculpting buildings of ice through the manipulation of water in the atmosphere. Though weak individually, most maids are able to gauge their circumstances relative to the enemy, and they won't charge their units headstrong into a situation where they are clearly outmatched, unless there is some strategic advantage to be gained.

Head Maids are maids that have served under the mansion before even the Grand War, and though originally no smarter then the stock they were drawn from, have eventually reached a level of intelligence that rivals that of a human (a bit a human trained to be a housemaid), and command both lesser maids and other fairies as per their mistresses' word. They'll often know a wide range of spells (biased towards ice and illusions) and are incredibly maneuverable in the air, able to (usually) dodge a speeding bullet permitting they get the initiative, and like their leader, can freeze projectiles they can't dodge mid-air. Depending on personality, they can be either cheerful or no-nonsense professionals, but head maids are commandeering enough that they can get even leprechauns, which normally shirk under the authority of fairies beside the Lady herself, to follow their orders, making them invaluable in leading mixed units.

Maids, though often used for matters beyond their intended purpose, are still houseworkers at heart; they absolutely detest dirty surroundings, and all but the most hardened are terrified of cockroaches and rats.
Field Officer

Often veteran gyrochauns from the Boarder Wars which predate their entrance to Gensokyo, most Field Officers (occasionally called Centurions colloquially for the fact that they are often over a century in age) are rather old by fairy standards; they remember when leprechauns transitioned from wearing red to wearing green after ceasing to be a solitary species, and then again to blue after the Grand War. Centuries of war have hardened their will relative to most fey, and they're among the most devoted to Lady Cirno out of all her forces, rivaling only the knights and her close friends; indeed, most of them have met her in-person at some point.

It's difficult for a fairy to remain cold and distant for an extended period of time without going mad, and in order to keep their sanity intact in face of the horrors they've seen and losses they've felt, these veteran soldiers often adopt gung-ho, masculine outlook on conflict; they're eager to lead their men into the glory of combat for their Lady, and will compete with both the fairies and the knights in order to get the opening attack. Experts in cover and drill tactics, FOs can lead their men to pin down a larger enemy unit for hours until either armored units or the fairies from the skies finally destroy them, preferring subtlety and sneakiness over fancy danmaku to deal with a threat in spite of their eager personalities.

Chauns of action, many scorn the use of "pretty light-shows" as a combat doctrine, and usually shoot at unknown targets before bothering to check whether they're friendly or not. For these reasons, knights can rarely stand their presence, while smarter fairies will deride them for being "pig-headed", giving these officers poor chemistry with both. A Head Maid with sufficient nerve can make them submissive by pointing out their hypocrisies over disdaining gratuitous magic use, as most their vehicles relies on it at least some extent, to say of the magical bombs used by grenadiers.

Officers will use the same weapons as a standard gyrochaun, but some might prefer to use the easier to conceal gyropistol in place of the heavier rifle model. This weapon is still semi-automatic, but has shorter range and ammo capacity. They almost never use direct magic, but are prone to using their weapons in unconventional manners to throw off their foes, and have a love for setting up traps, mundane, magical, or otherwise.
Spring Herald

Descendant from a branch of diplomats who were known to go to great lengths in order to negotiate with both allies and enemies during the era of the Great Fairy Alliance, most modern Spring Heralds fulfil a role within the units they're attached to similar to a cross between a field medic and a negotiator: they'll try and sort things over with not openly hostile opposing forces in hopes of aligning their interests as well as use their beveolent healing magiks to aid in the recovery of the wounded.

Such fairies do not normally partake in conflict if can be helped, and usually prefer peace to war (if for no other reason then the fact war makes their jobs a lot harder). When found, they're more often or not part of a guarded mission then openly leading forces, and will often only consider combat as a last resort. Nevertheless, creatures that are presumed to be "non-negotiable", such as alien molds and the like, might force them into combat anyway, in which their attack is a simple bullet spray not unlike that of a scout.

They're commonly an objective of defense (and capture), safeguarding a herald in between travels to an area of ambassadory significance.

Ground Vehicles:

Most Ice-Nine ground vehicles can be separated into two distinct categories: pre-space vehicles which were developed locally by the fairies themselves using mostly human technology, most of which are designs over a century old, and post-space vehicles created using technology gleaned from trade with so called "space-fairies", the term used to describe fae that didn't originate from Earth.

Block Tank

Developed using technology traded from the Popstar System fairies, these lumbering machines are built using curious modular bricks of metal stacked together in order to form highly versatile fighting vehicles that are not only reliable but trivial to repair, making them a popular replacement to the old "conventional" machines the ice fairies were using prior. Said vehicles were crafted into three distinct standards to mirror the classes of tank they replaced, Light Tanks, Medium Tanks, and Heavy Tanks, each model having certain standardizations in order to give it a role on the battlefield. In spite of this, many non-standardized vehicles exist, crafted out of a mismatch of parts in order to best suit the desires of their crews, so block tanks can take on a multitude of forms.

Generally, light tanks (a doctrinal term in reference to what vehicles they're meant to replace tactically: the smallest models of block tank are known to weigh more then the MBTs of pervious generations which they serve with cocurrently) will be equipped with a 150 mm mortar that fires either cannonballs or large-calibre exploding shells that are super effective against infantry, and more rarely with a 76 mm gun better suited for an anti-vehicle role, or a sponson-mounted variant of the 150 mm mortar known as the sidewinder. In this regard, they're closer to an assault gun than a true tank.

Medium tanks are larger versions of their smaller counterparts, mounting a 90 mm blackthorne general purpose gun capable of firing all sorts of projectiles up to and including danmaku, which though smaller and diameter, hit with much greater force and are effective against enemy armor.

The largest conventional tanks are of the heavy class, and will generally use a 120 mm shillelagh gun that fires with enough power to threaten modern MBTs, making them the goto anti-armor platform.

Many tanks will fall outside of this class system, and can be anything from 20 foot tall blocks bristling with sidewinders to unarmed battering rams which destroy targets by crushing them.

Armored vehicles that aren't tanks are a relatively unexplored concept by the earthen fey; prior to the introduction of dedicated vehicles, most soldiers simply rode on the backs of the tanks they were assigned to accompany. The fairy APC made with metal star bricks finds its way in almost all major fairy militaries, and is in essence a metal box on tracks, with the ice fairy variant being known as the "Ice Box", though leprechan crews often call it the "Trash bin" for its resemblance to a garbage bin on threads. Often unarmed, these machines' purpose is to ferry the groundbound soldiers into the battlefield while keeping them protected from enemy fire, also acting as transports for fairies to reduce the fatigue of a long march or as artillery tractors.

On occasion, a turret mounting a lighter weapon like a 76 mm gun or machine-gyro will be mounted on these vehicles, forming an IFV of sorts, though the added machinery means that these vehicles often have smaller crew carrying abilities.

What happens when you give a fairy one too many blocks and let their imagination run wild, a battlestation is a mobile fortress bristling with guns, cannon, and artillery in order to bring down the lady's wrath on those who prove resilient against conventional weapons. About the size of a yacht and proudly bearing the lady's colours for all to see, battlestations are defined by displacing over 120 tonnes of weight, as well as mounting the massive BS cannon, which fires 240 mm shell into enemy targets with frightening accuracy and power, annihilating lesser tanks with a single blow. This cannon is fed through ammunition zones placed throughout fairy-controlled space, with shells directly warped from these areas into the vehicle's autoloader to cut down on the amount of ammunition stored within the mighty machines. Other weapons include anything mounted on the lesser models of tank, though sidewinder mortars are popular due to their wide range of motion.

Bringing a battlestation into battle is no small task: engineers have to often freeze the ground in order to make sure it can support the massive engines as they lumber through it on massive pairs of threads, while most stations have their own small crew of security forces which can be dispatched onto the ground to protect them against infantry threats. A station contains both bedding, a kitchen, and other enmities within it to allow it to function independently if needed, as well as serve in the secondary role of a mobile command center.

Though allegedly made to a specific pattern favored by each civilization, many variations of the battlestation exist, some of them with multiple BS cannons. Ice Nine contains the third largest respiratory of these vehicles of all the fairy factions, possessing a bit over two hundred and thirty, of which most are stationed on the planet proper.

During Ice Nine's planetary and interdimensional trips across the galaxy, certain obstacles have been encountered that had proven so resilient as to be a challenge even for multiple battlestations to effectively tackle. Attempts were made to construct stronger, more resilient parts, but were met with failure as the "engineers" of the nation had no idea how any of them actually worked. The military nearly decided to look elsewhere in order to deal with these unforeseen perils, eschewing more practical methods over large, cumbersome, logistically demanding super tanks, but the shrewd leprechaun dealers of Beat Star, not willing to let an opportunity to expand their coffers go by, offered a newer range of equipment at a vastly inflated price.

Though at first skeptical, both the Lady and her subjects were awed by the size of the next generation of battlestations, and ordered enough parts to construct several dozen, with eight being the number currently in operational condition. Bigger, stronger, and louder then the generation of capital landships before them, the Battlefortress is armed with several degrees more BS cannons then even the best designed of its predecessors, taking advantage of improvements in turret design to fit several cannons on mounts in its upper hull, shedding most of the smaller calibre weapons in order to stuff as many big guns onto its frame as possible for maximum anti-armor performance. The crown jewel of these weapons is the BFC (Battle Fortress Cannon), a 16 inch mortar capable of hurling a shell the size of an automobile across the battlefield in order to decimate fortifications and units alike. Likewise, the vehicle typically runs on four sets of tracks more proportionate to its size, meaning it displaces less ground pressure then its predecessor and actually has better performance in spite of weighing a great deal more. Finally, the lack of superfluous guns eliminates many of the weak points found in the armor of the earlier generation of battle stations.

In spite of their almost complete superiority over their predecessors, battlefortresses are used only very rarely, due to being both a rather new addition as well as astronomically expensive to operate and move (in a race that only has a tentative grasp of economics, no less.), to mention the cost on morale that would occur if such a magnificent machine were to be lost. When there are used, they're typically escorted by their earlier peers as part of a battle group.
Chi-Yo 36 Light Tank/Type 75-36 Mobile AA Gun

Among the oldest of the tank models still in use, the Chisaii-Yosai 36 (named after the cycle in which it was conceived, 136, the last year of the Grand War) is a venerable pattern that dates back to the closing stages of the Grand War, and has since been extensively modernized over the decades into its present form. Bearing a rotating turret mounting a 76 mm gun that can fire a wide range of different ammunition, as well as an anti-tank missile launcher added to aid it against modern threats, this light tank is often used by veterans old enough to remember when the tank was still cutting-edge technology from a fairy perspective, and admire them for their unique character and purposeful design in contrast to the "soulless collections of parts" that they deride the post-space vehicles to be. Though their armour is heavily dated, they'll still shrug off most infantry weapons as they did during 2021, while those piloting them often have over a century of experience under their belt. Some tanks are known to react seemingly on their own device, only furthering the belief that they somehow possess a spirit.

The Type 75-36 is a variation of the vehicle that replaces the turret with an open top brandishing dual 75 mm AA cannons, which are dangerous to both airborne targets as well as lightly armoured vehicles and infantry.
Ki 45 Medium Tank

Though you'd be forgiven for thinking it was a stretched-out Chi-Yo 36, the Kiisai chū-sensha 45 was actually developed separately as a modernization of an older vehicle from the Grand War in order to make it stronger, more reliable, and overall resemble the MBTs in use by humanity during the latter 20th century, with each earthen faction placing their own nuances to their pattern of the tank. The ice fairies, having gotten hold of what some presume to be either a Type 59 tank or a T-55, decided to modify their version of the tank to better resemble the human-made vehicle, resulting in what was in essence a T-55 built for fairy specifications, down to using a 100 mm gun with an autoloader.

These tanks were never top of the line, even when they first rolled off of the assembly lines during the Second Ethanol War, and are a far cry from most of the horrors that await in the 22nd era, the sheer quantity in which they were produced means that they continue to be in use as the second most numerous tank model after the lighter block tanks, while many crews prefer their rotating turret over the fixed casemate of their supposed replacement.
Hyō-Yo 64 Main Battle Tank

Developed from a combination of kappa and human technology after convincing the former group to aid them in the construction of a tank capable of fighting those of the outside world, the Hyō-Yosai 64 is, in contrast to the unsophisticated nature of most fairy technology, a highly advanced main battle tank fitted with then experimental and then classified technology from both races, a bit simplified to make it useable by its fairy crew. For starters, its power plant includes an experimental reactor that works on energy extracted from plants known as a saboten reactor, making the vehicle deathly silent when not in motion, even running, as well as leaving no exhaust trail and little heat signature. Another major technology lies in its armor: advanced composites give the tank an amount of resilience said to only be surpassed by the mighty battlestations in spite of the fact that its actually smaller dimension-wise than the mass-produced heavy block tank, allowing it to shrug off all but the heaviest anti-tank munitions. Finally, to complement its silence, the tank is also outfitted with a simplified version of optical camouflage, a kappa technology which makes the tank invisible to the naked eye for a brief period of time, making the tank near-undetectable in these moments. Its is armed with a 120 mm gun similar in design to the shillelagh, as well as a secondary co-axial machine-gyro capable of peppering the air with hundreds of minijets.

The sheer complexity of these machines meant that no more then a couple hundred were ever produced, the last of them rolling off them assembly lines shortly before the contract with the kappa had ended. As a result of this, these tanks are used sparingly and with the same amount of delicate consideration as a battlestation, with tanks that aren't totally destroyed after battle salvaged and repaired. The lady herself personally owns one which she occasionally takes on joy rides.
Type BS Mark 1 Heavy Motor Carriage

Developed from a modified Ki-45 chassis, the Type BS represents a fusion of both pre-space vehicle parts and post-space blocks in order to frankenstien together a machine capable of hefting the enormous BS cannon without having to devote the resources to send out an actual battlestation. Underpowered and with several serious design flaws, the BS 1 nevertheless remains the cheapest way to bring bunker leveling ordinance into the field, and provided that its kept far, far away from enemy vehicles, preferably off-map, it does that job respectively well, though it often has to be dragged off the map by several APCs for repairs as it inevitably destroys its own transmission whenever it fires its weapon. Its pilots are usually of questionable sanity, even among fairy standards.

Once set up, it's best treated as a static gun emplacement, as it certainly isn't moving after firing.
Type BS Mark 2 Superheavy Motor Carriage

Built on the leftover chassis of an older heavy tank model dating from the Second Ethanol Conflict, the Type BS Mark 2 is an attempt to make a self-propelled gun packing the destructive capabilities of a proper battlestation while being easier and cheaper to set up. Improving on its predecessor, while the chassis is still arguably too small for the weapon it brandishes, the mark 2 is not only far less likely to blow itself up after firing subsequent rounds, but is also capable of sustained fire, allowing a single vehicle to rain heavy shells onto the field at an alarming rate. Finally, most mark 2s have a small AA platform mounted on top of them to swat the aircraft that will inevitably want to bomb the snot out of their big, juicy hulls.

Though old, its armor also isn't half bad, allowing it to slug it out on the front if needed and vaporize enemy armor with its massive weapon. It's best not to use it as an actual replacement for a battlestation however; while not bad, its armor is rife with weak points owing to its archaic design, and its lack of mobility makes it a poor match for any proper tank.
Chi-Ken 32 Light Tank

The Chiisai-Keninsha 32 (Small Tractor 32, 32 meaning the 132nd cycle of Gensokyo, the year in which it reached serial production, 2017 in the Gregorian calender) is an ancient light tank design that is among the first vehicles to be produced by the Great Fairy Alliance, signifying their adoption of technology as a means to combat the increasingly hostile monsters they faced during the Grand War, rarely ever used by modern forces excepting cases where they're the only resources avalible.

With a long and detailed history, "Chicken tanks", as they have come to be known by the common chaun, were produced by the thousands over the many years they remained in active service, leading to many examples both derelict and intact littering ice fairy territories. Some have attempted to find new uses for these machines, while others are content having them sit around as a reminder of the history of the great ice fairy nation's humble beginnings. Tanks are sometimes used for the purpose of training new pilots in the operation of more advanced machines, and in at least a few cases of desperation, a handful of Chi-kens have seen battle on the modern field with mixed results during times of crisis, still functional after a century owing to their simple and robust design.

Many of the oldest tanks have been observed acting on seemingly their own volation like other ancient vehicles, going so far as to repeatedly attempt to execute their last enacted orders ad-infinium. This leads to such "ghost tanks" mindlessly patrolling certain Ice-Nine territories, intent on hunting any unauthorized intruders, with as much a chance of being a boon as they are a hinderance to their former owners.

First update is up, adding in the three basic generic CO units that have been showing up in a couple games as of late. They are to be found in the second post, due to having reached the world limit in the first.

In addition, aside from a few minor updates to the first page's army section (some typos fixed, an additional paragraph), the Gyrochaun has been given a minor update in equipment.

Now, it is possible to arm [modern] Ice-Nine grenadiers with the Shoe-Kicker, the name for their standard model grenade launcher. Though crude (it's an aluminum tube combined with the back of a traffic cone, a switch, and a discharger), it allows a grenadier to launch RPGs of either conventional or magical nature at 2.5 times the distance he could normally throw them, making him downright dangerous against infantry and lightly armored vehicles alike. This is not without drawbacks however; his rate of fire is halved, as it takes a turn to reload the launcher after it has fired, and the specialized nature of the grenades means that he cannot throw them like he can bombs, locking him into using one or the other.

A lesser addition to their arsenal is the gyropistol, which is basically the Gyrojet MkII.
