Mirokan Vs Flummox: Stone and Steel, Flesh and Fur

A sense of quietude pervades this ancient outpost, far on the fringe of the empire.
Yet recently, a detachment of mercenary men has been deployed to this outpost hailing from the far-flung land of Tilea, famous for its boundless markets.

Mercenaries spend their time idly, whether on watch, patrol, or playing checkers and smoking pipes.

A pair of Barclay lancers has been sent on patrol, to survey the surrounding woodlands for any signs of danger.

A scouting party of satyrs enters from the forest to the east.

They're supposed to be the eyes and ears of the column traveling shortly behind. However, satyrs are poorly trained soldiers at best, and rowdy hooligans ordinarily (we don't talk about the worst). These satyrs are, as typical, drunk off their asses.

One yells for his wineskin back while the other prances up ahead and tauntingly takes a swig.
The one in back tries to balance on a rock, while another tries to see how close he can get to the trees before moving out of the way.

None of them are expecting to find any enemies, much less well-equipped mercenary bands.

The lancers hear movement in the woods and see dark shapes amidst the trees. The men of Barclay, Gregor and Rorik, give each other a knowing look, and with silent determination lower their lances and dig their heels into the sides of their steeds.

Seeing the Barclay lancers, the spear satyr breaks into a run, yelling something about cowards.

The satyr in front begins to draw his sword and slurs loudly, "Do not worry, comrades! Their weapons are only as sharp as their spirits!"
Unfortunately, he is wrong. Men of Barclay wield only the finest lances.

A satyr fumbles with his warhorn but drops his weapon in the process. Bending over to retrieve it, the blood rushes to his head. Dizzily, all sense of urgency fades away.

The satyr in rear attempts to notch an arrow to his bow.

Skirmish tune, played by Savasi tribesman: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtwEr4AD...31&index=7

The sturdy warsteeds quicken their pace, with a frightening staccato of pounding hooves. The tempo steadily increases to a crescendo, and then IMPACT!

The men of Barclay run them through easily upon their stout oaken lances, and hoist them upwards in an effort to remove them from their lances.
Gregor impacts with the third satyr, and at that moment loses all momentum.

Rorik looks on fearfully at his trapped companion, deep in the woods with only him to rely upon. Unless they drop their lances and draw swords, they are sitting ducks in these woods.
"May the gods protect us," he says under his breath

Satyrs are unfortunately very soft and fleshy, and disdainful of armor (as well as most clothing in general).
Gregor and Rorik's lances pierce cleanly through their ribcages and the satyrs' corpes slide down the lance like softened butter on a stick.

The trampled satyr is thrown against a rock and loses consciousness. To be fair, he was so drunk he was probably going to do that anyway.

The archer draws his bow back and takes aim, holding his breath in a vain attempt to steady his trembling hands.
Everything seems very distant. This must be a drunken hallucination. The battle scene throbs as a small drop of blood lands on his face.

His particles are oscillating like crazy.

With but a single satyr before them, the Barclay lancers drop their lances and draw swords to do battle with the satyrs.
Gregor charges forward, and trades blows with the satyr before him.

Rorik digs his heels into his horse, urging him to stop as he seems the last of the satyrs has been slain.

The body of the headless satyr collapses onto its unconscious companion, who is going to have an unpleasant surprise when he wakes up.

The beat of war drums can be heard in the distance.

Gregor and Rorik survey the woodlands before them. With all of the creatures before them slain or incapacitated, they return back to the fortress. Gregor himself has taken an arrow wound, though it was somewhat mitigated by his armor.

Rorik is pleased that they were able to slay so many satyrs with but only minor wounds. If one could see under his visor, he would be beaming with pride, almost disappointed that they could not slay more.

Gregor is more worried, and underneath the sharp pain of his wound he wonders when satyrs were last seen in these woods.

Meanwhile back at base, soldiers are still in various stages of relaxation, chessplaying and boozery, their only punctuation in the long sentence of frontier boredom.

A flock of crows passes over the fort. They seem to be searching for something.

The war drums in the distance grow louder. They are joined by the sound of horns and the incessant wailing of pipes.
