Advance Downtime Notice (You should probably read this)

Ok so, it might not have escaped your notice that this forum doesn't exactly work quite as it should.
Or maybe it has, in which case I'll point out to you that it sometimes takes multiple attempts to open someone's profile and that people's avatars have a tendency to intermittently disappear (as well as similar issues in the user control panel, admin systems and probably a bunch of other pages).

And considering our flagging userbase, faulty board software is really the last thing we need to keep people coming.

I've really not been much of a fan of SMF ever since it was installed, so what I am planning to do is to migrate this forum onto a different bulletin board system which works better, when I get out of work next weekend. "Migration" means that all of your posts, topics and profiles should remain entirely as they are now, but board-specific features such as the skin and emoticons won't unless I reintroduce them.
Also in order to keep this forum as an archive and backup in case it doesn't work, the URL is likely to change as well (from picturewars.net/smf to probably picturewars.net/bb or picturewars.net/forum) so you will need to update any links or bookmarks (though once it works I'll change picturewars.net to redirect to the /forum rather than /smf directory).

The catch is that while I think I can manage this, I am not going to lie and claim I know exactly what I am doing because I don't. I've never done this before and I am no particular master at operating ftp and forum databases, so while I do have a fairly useful piece of software to do most of the work for me it may take some significant time and even then, there's a chance it just won't work at all. If it turns out I can't do it then I'll cancel the process and reactivate this board so we can talk about what we do next, because while I do think a better board is necessary abandoning all of our topics is not something to be taken lightly and will need some talking about. This is a worst case scenario and hopefully won't happen!

So yeah this is your warning that the forum is likely to be accessible for some to most of next weekend while I try and upgrade it to a different forum architecture and there's likely to be a couple of teething problems just after that. I have more announcements to make too, but I'll make them after I'm done.
If you have any questions/complaints/suggestions I don't think I need to tell you where to post them (it's here).

Aww, stuff's happening just as I returned... Though I'm sure it won't be an inconvenience for long. Good luck, Chao!

Well, you still have a week to do things in, it's only at most two days the forum won't be inaccessible (hopefully a lot shorter)

Sounds exciting to me! Somebody should make a picture wars theme, and new emotes would be cool.

New emoticons should definitely be on the cards, I mean we're a spriting community but our little faces are:
A) Pretty low quality
B) Not ours

Re: Advance Downtime Notice (You should probably read this)

The plan is to switch to MyBB, as it is free, easily extendable and has a pre-built wizard for converting forum databases made in SMF 1.1 (which we are running right now)
Also I know a guy who also has a MyBB forum so if I get terribly stuck I can ask him to save me

We could hold a smiley drawing competition to inaugurate the new forums!

Nothing is foolproof to a talented fool.

Speaking of emotes, what happened to those ones used on the freeforums (the one a competition was done for)?

I'm going to have to say that what probably happened to those is that we forgot to transfer them over to here and then forgot they existed at all.

I'm getting my laptop this weekend so that'll mean more spriting time for me :D Hopefully everything goes smoothly!

Shame, because they were really good. Have you got exact dates that you plan to do this move on, or are things not that far in motion yet?

I still have my losing entry from the ancient freeforums competition.

I'd love to re-do it if we held a competition for new ones.

If we really wanted, couldn't we make all our own smilies, then save them and get an img code for them and insert them in our posts?

I'd like to have a competition to make some new smilies for everyone to use though. Our last competition was a while ago.

RE: Advance Downtime Notice (You should probably read this)

Wow, that was actually really easy
I have a new account but everyone else should just be able to use theirs.

There'll be some teething problems (signatures are pretty fucked right now) and the theme is far from final but feel free to test your stuff out.

RE: Advance Downtime Notice (You should probably read this)

Well that was quick, I was expecting it to be down for days. The theme is a bit of an eyesore, but maybe it's because I've got so used to the much cleaner smf one.

Also, thanks Chao for your dedication to this community and forum. It's really appreciated :)

There's a couple of themes installed right now, none of them are really similar to the original one but you'll probably grow into one in time.

Also, this is just me being a bit nit-picky, but the max avatar size is 10kb which is unusually small. Of course this isn't at the top of your list right now but it's stopping me setting an avatar.
