Castor vs. Agent - The Rising

Many wonder what makes these islands float. Magic? Gravity rifts? Or maybe it's something else. The area is quiet, apart from the low hum being emitted from seemingly no where. A group of IPS soldiers have been sent to accompany two field scientists. They believe these crystals have something to do with these islands being capable of floating.

Not that the United Skvesh Empire needs this stuff, they already have hovering technology. The USE is planning on selling these crystals to other planets. If they could, they would have just sent the researchers, but all off-world research expeditions require an escort. The sound of engines pierces the silence.

An unarmed HPC hovers over the island, and comes to a halt. It slowly descends towards the ground. A crate is dropped out of the storage compartment, and the two researchers jump out. They put the crate onto their cart and push it across the bridge. Two soldiers also hop out and follow them. An armed HPC waits for a spot to let it's crew out.

Curiosity killed the cat. This is true. (Actually, a lot of cats are intelligent enough to recognize a threat, but that's not the point.) This is why common sense was invented, which is another story entirely. In the end, however, curiosity is also the reason that science exists, although a natural need to give order to the universe counts too. Anyway, this is why a grand enterprise of organization, categorization, classification, identification, analysis and thought was created. And thanks to curiosity, humanity now owns a notable section of the Orion-Cygnus arm and is currently able to do things that scientists of only 500 years ago said was impossible by every law they knew.

Powerful of a thing, isn't it?

So powerful that it still goes about its ways today. It still empowers people to do anything necessary to discover. To explore. To clarify. To invent. To unlock. Nothing more or less than that.

But science can only get so far without a little bit of help. There is a lot of danger in the Milky Way, especially with all the empires competing and warring. No researcher worth their salt is unaware of the fact that just walking around staring at rocks and grass and neutrinos will probably be quite worthless when they got shot, torn apart, strangled, asphyxiated or even picked up and then eaten by large avians.

And there's where the military powers come in.

The Sentinels get a lot of their technology - and their funding - from the Galactic Enterprise (a massive conglomeration of corporations that can practically be considered its own nation). The reason for this is the amount of errands they run for said organization. This is one of them. A scan by a Galactic Enterprise research vessel was committed fairly recently, and it showed that there were various unidentified energy signatures residing in the mysteriously floating islands of the planet Vermillion. Unfortunately there was plenty of activity down on the semi-surface so the best option was to make sure that the first spot for setting up camp was safe.

This is what Sentinels Miles Campo and Jasmin Lark set out to achieve. Both of them jump off of a troop floater, Lark carrying a Conqueror (a very well known ion-spitting weapon) and Campo carrying an Archon rifle. Tactical Command felt no particular need to send out a high amount of soldiers and decided that two would do perfectly fine, given that the initial scans of this island showed no sentient (or harmful, for that matter) life.

If your plan of attack is going to plan, you're walking into an ambush.

The unarmed HPC shuts the hatch and flies off. The other one lowers to the ground and lets out the soldiers inside. An elite, an engineer, another gunner, and an infantryman. They calmly walk towards the base, but the engineer runs ahead.

The elite, Warrant Officer Davis, makes sure everyone is present. He thinks this mission is a waste of time, but it's better than being stuck in Vkro, attending meetings, or patrolling the Head Quarters. The gunner from the first HPC halts and stands guard at the entrance. His companion continues onward, sticking close to the scientists.

The Engineer is going to set up a research station. The crate contains research equipment, a PEU, and a few MMS containers. They plan on harvesting some of the crystals to collect data, and later perform tests and perhaps produce more of them.

For now, the crystals have been dubbed "ATC-2", after a UAV was sent to observe the island for a day. It is an abbreviation for Anomaly Type C- 2. Type C anomalies are minerals, and this is the second to be discovered. The first were very similar. They were large green crystals, also floating. When a laser was shot through it, it exploded, killing a researcher and wounding her accomplice. Scientists are now working on safer versions that can be used in the battlefield as weapons.

Perhaps these crystals could be used to alter gravity. Such a tool could change the course of battle. Instead of shooting down enemy vehicles, you shoot a beam at them and smash them into the ground. Instead of making thicker armor to protect your tanks, you halt incoming fire.

The floater takes off and both Sentinels get on their way. Lark looks over her gun. At the moment, it appears to be in optimal condition. All readouts are normal, nanites working correctly, capacitors running at all the right levels. Weapons like these are generally reserved for heavies, as they are much better used for suppression and room-clearing, not so much for the tactical work that spec ops like Lark are suited to. As it should just so happen, though, Lark always takes to a change and decided that there was nothing wrong with experimenting. She typically used automatic rifles anyway; how much different could this weapon be?

If your plan of attack is going to plan, you're walking into an ambush.

The Engineer turns the pile of rubble into matter, to make room for the research area. The researchers see that the hallway up above is quite small, so they decide to wait. Davis motions to the pilot, letting him know he's clear to leave. He walks towards the entrance and slows his pace as he realizes that it's kind of crowded.

The HPC gains speed as it rises above the island, and the gunner makes sure the mounted LMG is operational.

HPC Pilot: "We'll be back here in about an hour and a half to pick you up. Contact the control ship if you need reinforcements."
Warrant Officer Davis: "Understood."

Re: Castor vs. Agent - The Rising

I need a shirt that says 'Ask Me Later, I'm Not Done Procrastinating Yet'. Unfortunately for Agent. Sorry about the wait, I had to compensate for my lack of gaming during the school semester. Anyway...

Neither Lark nor Campo waste any time getting to their destination, walking with a quick gait. Campo's sensors pick up on something. A heat trace, higher than normal for the environment. Molecules moving around far quicker than they normally do, in patterns that were much too artificial for anything else. Somewhere out there, a particle arrangement device was being used. Campo keeps that in the back of his mind.

If your plan of attack is going to plan, you're walking into an ambush.

The engineer begins to make the stairs deeper, so then the soldiers can actually get to the next level. His ECDU-12 vibrates slightly as he pulls the trigger.

The rest of the soldiers pause and wait for the engineer to finish his work, not talking. Davis turns around and examines the world around him. There are clouds blocking his view of the ground, but it looks pretty cool. When he looks to his far left, he spots another island, and there is a tower on it. When he looks to his right, there is a hangar.

Maybe I could come back here for my vacation... He thinks to himself.

More walking. The calm before the storm.

"Campo, see about going over to that cliff and rappel down." Without any officer to take command, the higher ranking soldier is naturally in charge. Therefore, Lark dishes out orders.  "I'll take the tunnels."

"Alright."

If your plan of attack is going to plan, you're walking into an ambush.
