AntiBiotiK's Army test

Hey guys, I'm almost new to picture war and I would like to show you my 2 armies I am making,
I would love some constructive criticism.
Thanks :)

First one - the Antis
[Image: 1300783824.png]
It's crappy because it is my first one
EDIT : I have borrowed some props from a map :3, credits were given when used.

And the second one - No-name for now
[Image: 1300784054.png]
I haven't done too many things on their race because I have run out of ideas.
Thanks :)!

The first on is not half bad for a first army.

Re: AntiBiotiK's Army test

Very nice drill I like that. For a first army that's great IMO.

Have you done spritework before?

No, not really, I have just studied some great artists on this forum and found out the way of how they work, and I combined that into my own drawing mode.

Nice. I'll offer you the same advice I offered the other guy.
Crop out the unneeded white. Tidies the image up a tad. :)

Re: AntiBiotiK's Army test

You're doing pretty great for a beginner, but I think you're making too many armies. Try holding onto one and developing it, see how good you can make it look.

Yeah, but I keep running out of ideas, I need inspiration O.o; I was going through some armies here on forums and the ones I like are really complicated..well, I guess I should try harder.

Re: AntiBiotiK's Army test

They're complicated because people work on them for a long time. Your army won't look perfect after you make a few sprites, hold on to one and add things gradually as you feel like it. Develop some sort of back story or history on your army to help you make decisions on what to add or make them do.

Incoming wall of text:

Your sheet is quite messy and nothing really seems to be connected.

Your blue humanoids are suffering from the famous "Short leg syndrome" as well they are pretty god damn stiff, as in, they're basically a long block with legs, arms and a head. As I always say on humanoid armies, stand in front of a mirror and look at how your body is positioned in different poses and use that as a reference. (Or use Google to find images of people)

Your shading is also confusing the crap out of me, especially on the big grey thing. While on the top part the shading suggests a light shines from in front of it, the middle part of the green slime thing suggests dim light is coming from the left.
And then all the sudden at the end of it, the light is coming from below.
Get better at defining light sources and don't be afraid to use more dynamic dark and light spots.

Another thing I'd like to point out on the grey thing, which I presume is some sort of flying thing is the lack of any actual details which makes it look bland as hell when the shading isn't filling up the void. And your shading really isn't, you should probably define what everything is on it more, like, whats the bright grey thing slapped on the middle?
'Cause I have not the faintest clue.

Moving on, I kinda like the spider thing in the bottom right, but the body will dig into the ground, make the legs longer or raise the body.

I'll sum all that up:
Improve shading, stop just slapping shading on like it's a gradient, move it along the lines of the object and learn how to define materials with it too. (You can look up pixel art tutorials, ask someone or PM me and I'll whip up some examples)
Less stiff poses.
Details.

One last thing that popper up in my head - While there's nothing wrong with just using 3 different shades on each color, you can always use way more shades then just 3 of them.
Also, the type of dithering you use for shading is kinda unpractical for PW, due to the small sprites.

If you didn't understand anything, just ask and I'll try to explain it better.

Well this is my latest update, thanks a lot for your help, I understood everything you say and had a good laugh at my mistakes.
I will try to make them better but, I just have a problem, the legs, and the body shape of the army, well, I really like them now, but could you, if you have time, just show me an example of one of my aliens? Just take a convict and if you can and want, modify it so I can see how it should look.
THANKS a lot.
Also, the grey thing was a test for a crate, but I've made more down below (some props are borrowed as I said, from the apocalyptic map from FP)

Oh, the metal boxes ? Yeah sorry, I just borrowed the shape and the idea, they are made from scrap, I just looked at yours and tried to make them look the same, if you want me to get rid of them I will.

Re: AntiBiotiK's Army test

Actually the wodden boxes, I made those ages ago in a huge prop pack, no worries though, I made it for Spartan I think to use in a big free sheet for use in maps or armies. So it's, well, free.

If you didn't notice I tried to keep the "short leg style" without making them too short.

Re: AntiBiotiK's Army test

Don't be afraid to style up the clothing, a convict will probably not like being pushed around and makes the most to rebel without punishment, like roughing up his clothes. Maybe even walking around without a shirt.

Also, don't just leave all of them clones of each other, try to make a boatload of variants of each unit. They can serve the point but just look different from their fellows.
Just try to avoid the "clone army" look.

Re: AntiBiotiK's Army test

Yes, except that his left foot is twisted 360 degrees.

in 3/4 perspective the foot on the side that the person isn't facing is usually viewed from in front not the side like you have it now.
He doesn't seem to have a crotch though, the legs just end in a line. Which I presume is a belt? The legs could also be just a tad longer, at least keep them the same length as the torso.
(For reference, we humans have legs twice the length of our torso in general, try folding your leg and hugging it, you will notice your knee touches your jaw.)

Re: AntiBiotiK's Army test

Okay, thanks, I will stick with the old ones until I manage to make one that looks more "human".
I'm going to remember your tips every time I continue the race, I will modify each one of them so it will be better, I will post when I finish editing em.
Thank you.
