Programs to use for Picture Wars!

Here is a list of art programs that you might choose to use for Picture Wars.

Anything with layers can pretty much be used for animation.

Gimp: A free, open source program. It is similar to Photoshop and can be used for photo-manipulation also.
http://www.gimp.org/

Photoshop: A program used for drawing, and photo-manipulation. Must be bought or a 60 day free trial.

Microsoft Paint: The default program for windows computers. Can be downloaded for free if you do not have it. Very Basic.

Pixen: A pixel art program found on the Mac. Pixen is free also. Possibly animation? I've never used it.
http://pixenapp.com/

ASEPRITE: A free pixel art program with layers but lacks some other advanced tools. Can be used for animation
http://www.aseprite.org/

Graphx2: A free pixel art program with many functions and a steep learning curve. Has an uncluttered GUI. Can do animation.
http://code.google.com/p/grafx2/

MyPaint: A free art program with pixel art capabilities along with standard digital art tools.

Graphics Gale: A free or paid pixel art oriented program with the free version being slightly limited. Limited in that you can not save files as gifs.

PyxelEdit: A developing pixel art program in beta used for easy tileset creation and other pixel art.

Promotion: A professional level pixel art program with many advanced tools.

Paint.net: Another Photoshop like program with pixel art capabilities. Free like gimp

If you can think of any other programs I should add to this list, write below.

Ahaha, it's about time someone did this. Nice inclusive list. I'd be really cool if this was stickied so all the newcomers can see it instead of making new threads.

ASEprite has layers, and is notably good for animation, or at least it's what I use for animation. A bit too clunky for my liking though.

I used paint.net when I first started, add that.

Rotsprite is fairly awesome, a little awkward to use but makes pretty accurate rotations.

Oh my god when Trifon told me about ASEprite I was skeptical at first and had to get used to the different UI and hotkeys, but now it works like a charm for me. The only bad point is that you can't zoom out less than 100%, which is necessary for me to look at my maps when I draw them, for some maps are either bigger than 1920 or 1080 :c
Even then I think you can't even zoom to 100%, it's like everything starts from 200%

Doesn't seem to be working for me, but hey, all this is a minor problem anyway.

Scrolling without holding down anything zooms in ASEprite, you might want to pick up animation it in, it's really quite a nice little program once you get over the clunky ui imo.
