Re: Grammar and you: A sort of rant / question thread

My concept of grammar doesn't revolve around capital letters, it's the only aspect that as far as I am concerned really needs to be considered, the rest of it I am not able to comment on because I am horrible with them and after all it is the internet. Anyway I did take your advice, I went and ran about 4 miles with my friend, I'm not slightly angered anymore and you may continue bitching and insulting me to your heart's content, I fucked up bad, I probably deserve it. You may also feel free to spam my PM inbox with your insults, either is acceptable and I will not mind.

Swear words are not proper grammar; The way you often use them is not correct for the part of speech of their actual definition. Therefore swearing is infringing upon grammar rules, and if in a thread about proper grammar you swear, you are contradicting yourself, and are thus a hypocrite.

To be honest, I consider myself a bit of a pedant and even I think that this is going a little bit too far.
To consider swearing distateful is one thing, to call it grammaticaly incorrect is another one entirely.

The swear words are spelt correctly, used in an understandable context and are placed there for emphasis. I don't see how this violates any of the rules of the English language.

If you're only saying that to defend me, you don't have to, I honestly don't care at this point, I realize I fucked up, they have the right to be angry.

Last option is best option.

Dr.V has really discredited this entire thread with his first post failure.

No, it has nothing to do with you.
I'm saying it because Flummox is wrong and trying to be smug about something that he isn't actually allowed to be smug about.

Also I think both sides are being pretty silly and over-reacting here, but I've already given my own opinion on the subject of grammar and you've stopped arguing now so I don't think I need to say anything else.

The only swear I could think of that would be technically incorrect is "fuck", which originally stood for "Fornication Under Consent of the King", so if you wanted to be a total GRAMMAR BAD-ASS you could just say "F.U.C.K. WITH ME."

No I'm smug because I presented an entirely BS argument and he accepted it as defeat.

I will admit that I am far more bothered about spelling and only using odd numbers of punctuation (which isn't even actually a rule) than ending sentences with full stops, I guess I just assume everyone can do that anyway?
Like Dr V said, nobody is perfect!

For some reason the sight of two or four exclamation marks really bothers me, and I can never take any amount that is more than one to be sincere. That means if you see me using multiple exclamation marks I am probably being sarcastic ;)

Also, while I have to say that the people calling you stupid were being pretty silly themselves because they were arguing against you and not against your point, which isn't a valid argument, the fact that you immediately insulted all of them means that you were just as bad.
If you don't want people to shout at you, try and avoid calling them "an infestation of idiots who can't read", that counts as flaming under the forum rules (which admittedly I haven't released yet) and if you do it again in future you'll be punished as harshly as anyone saying it to you.

Re: Grammar and you: A sort of rant / question thread

I guess it's only problem when it's both hard to understand or goes against all laid grammar rules. Granted, I tend to also write wrong (finnish and english are quite different languages, you see), but I usually go back and fix my errors when I see them. Like earlier in Civ game, I spelled Sergeant as Sargeant(which, btw, doesn't give me error on spellcheck), Dr. V pointed it out, I went  back and fixed it. However, if someone has letter in wrong place or does other small mistakes I am not going to demand their head on silver place with garlic and mustard, served along wine and... Is there rule about stretching analogy?

God damn now I can see what happened to the other guys.
It is so hard to resist pointing out grammatical errors in the posts of people saying they try and use perfect grammar.

That was a pretty beautiful example of what to expect from this entire thread. So beautiful that it almost seems intentional.
